Cryptocurrency robbery and kidnapping cases
Overview
Legal proceedings have progressed in separate federal cases involving violent robberies targeting cryptocurrency holders.
In one instance, Martel Williams of St. Louis pleaded guilty to conspiracy to interfere with commerce by robbery. The charge stems from an August 2024 plot to extort approximately 4,100 Bitcoin from a family in Connecticut. While Williams and his associates reportedly abandoned the plan due to security camera concerns, the conspiracy charge remains. This incident is linked to a larger theft involving a Genesis creditor.
In a separate case, two brothers from Texas, Raymond Christian Garcia and Isiah Angelo Garcia, were sentenced to federal prison for a September 2025 home invasion in Minnesota. The brothers were convicted of interference with commerce by robbery after holding a victim and his family at gunpoint for several hours to steal over $8 million in cryptocurrency. Raymond Garcia received 180 months, while Isiah Garcia received 186 months.
