Côte d'Ivoire climate finance and reforestation initiatives

Overview

Côte d'Ivoire is implementing climate finance and reforestation strategies through community-level distributions and large-scale mobilization efforts.

Under the World Bank-sponsored REDD+ strategy, the Ministry of Environment distributed over 62.8 million FCFA in carbon credits to villages in the southwest, including Gnato, Bliéron, and Pimé. These funds reward communities for establishing a 1,059-hectare natural reserve near Taï National Park to prevent land conversion for agriculture. The payments are intended for local development projects such as fish, poultry, and pig farming.

To further its environmental goals, the Ministry signed a memorandum of understanding with TeraVert to assist in mobilizing financing for major climate projects. This includes a $500 million integrated program focusing on the agriculture-forest-energy-waste-finance nexus in central and northern Côte d'Ivoire. The partnership also supports ‘Veille Verte’, a $10 million digital system for real-time environmental incident reporting by citizens.
