Overview
Protests over chronic water shortages and rolling blackouts began in Cuba in May 2026, with demonstrators demanding reliable electricity and water supplies. By late July, nightly cacerolazos spread across Havana neighborhoods, prompting a large security operation in the El Diezmero area on 24 July that deployed police, MININT units and the National Special Brigade to quell street blockades and fire‑extinguishing demonstrations.
The unrest continued to intensify, and on the night of 31 July‑1 August police forces moved to block the Communist Party headquarters in Havana’s La Lisa district. Residents again staged nightly protests, closing avenues, setting trash fires and sounding pots, reporting only about 20 minutes of electricity per day and days without water. These actions were part of a broader pattern that included earlier confrontations in March in Morón and June protests in several Havana districts, showing a sustained escalation of public dissent and state security responses throughout the summer of 2026.
