Cuba aviation fuel shortages and operational challenges
Overview
Cuba is experiencing a significant shortage of Jet A-1 aviation fuel that has persisted since February 2026. This scarcity has impacted approximately 20 active airlines, forcing major carriers such as Iberia, Air Canada, and Air France to suspend services. To manage the shortage, remaining airlines must often fly with full tanks for round trips or schedule technical stops outside of Cuba for refueling.
The fuel shortage has been extended at ten international airports, including Havana, Varadero, and Santiago de Cuba, with the unavailability now expected to persist until at least November 1.
In addition to the fuel crisis, authorities at José Martí International Airport in Havana are conducting rehabilitation works on runways and taxiways to meet international safety standards, with repairs expected to conclude by October 19.
