Cuba-Russia ties and US sanctions

In late July 2026, President Miguel Díaz‑Canel emphasized Cuba’s revolutionary vision while highlighting a deepening partnership with Russia, including recent fuel shipments and the prospect of further deliveries. He framed a series of domestic reforms as efforts to unlock productive forces without compromising sovereignty, and condemned U.S. sanctions as imperial pressure.

The following day, Díaz‑Canel escalated his criticism of Washington, describing the U.S. oil embargo and tightened sanctions as “political genocide” against Cuba. He rejected U.S. accusations of Cuban interference and left‑wing terrorism, linking the sanctions to Cuba’s severe economic crisis, fuel shortages, blackouts, and the withdrawal of foreign tourism and financial firms.
