Cultural festivals in Calabria are being utilized to promote regional heritage and address social challenges such as village depopulation.

The Dialog Festival in Casignana focuses on Mediterranean culture and the relationship between archaeological heritage and territorial development. By utilizing the Villa Romana and the historical center, the event seeks to reposition Calabria as a central connection point for various territories through disciplines like archaeology, theater, and music.

Other regional initiatives include the ‘Spop-Art Fest’ in Badolato, which uses art and musical performances to mobilize against the depopulation of small villages. In Ricadi, the ‘Estate a Casa Berto’ festival, now entering its second decade, explores the literary works of Giuseppe Berto through theater and music. The 2026 edition of the Ricadi festival, scheduled for September 2 to 5, focuses on translating Berto’s literature into other artistic languages such as cinema and theater.

The third edition of the Dialog Festival has commenced in Casignana under the theme ‘The Mediterranean that Resists: Calabria at the Center of a New Cultural Geography’. The event aims to position the Locride region as a hub connecting history, innovation, and European identity. During opening debates at the Villa Romana di Casignana, discussions addressed the synergy required between ministries and local authorities to manage heritage and reduce costs. A central component of the festival is the ‘Archaeology, Territory and Future’ forum, which includes a proposal for the Locride area to serve as a pilot territory for the designation of ‘Italian Capital of Archaeology and Historical Tourism’.
