Cultural festivals in Leipzig

Overview

Leipzig is hosting two distinct cultural events in October 2026. The Literarischer Herbst literature festival takes place from October 11 to 17 under the motto ‘Alles ist möglich’. The program features international authors such as Philippe Sands and includes specialized events for younger readers, such as a presentation by Axel Scheffler regarding ‘Die Grüffelo-Oma’ at the Schaubühne Lindenfels, and the book premiere of Martina Hefter’s novel, ‘Nach der Sonne Schauen’.

Separately, the 69th edition of the DOK Leipzig festival, an international documentary and animated film event, runs from October 26 to November 1. The festival opens on October 26 with the world premiere of Ina Borrmann’s documentary, ‘Guten Abend, du Schöne’, at the Leipzig Hauptbahnhof. This film serves as a successor to Maxie Wanders’ 1977 work documenting women’s experiences in the GDR.

Under director Ola Staszel, the festival introduces the ‘Fokus Ost’ (Focus East) series and a ‘Positions’ section to stimulate discussion on contemporary issues and identity. The program also includes a tribute to Czech filmmaker Helena Třeštíková. The ‘DOK Neuland’ XR exhibition, themed ‘Landslide’, explores ecological and societal crises through immersive media, including the 360-degree VR reportage ‘Living in Water’.

Supported by broadcaster MDR, the festival awards the ‘Golden Dove’ and the MDR Film Prize. The award ceremony for the Golden and Silver Seagulls is scheduled for October 31 at the Schaubühne Lindenfels, while the ‘Golden Seagull’ for best documentary is determined by an online audience vote. Total prize money exceeds 50,000 euros.
