Cultural heritage and memory initiatives in Mexico and Peru

Overview

Cultural authorities and authors in Mexico and Peru are pursuing various initiatives to protect heritage and preserve historical memory.

In Mexico, efforts include deepening cooperation with UNESCO regarding cultural rights and artistic education, alongside a legislative proposal to implement a zero tax rate for small and medium-sized bookstores. Additionally, new literature has been introduced in Sinaloa to commemorate communities affected by changes to the Fuerte River, focusing on preserving oral histories.

In Peru, the Ministry of Culture is prioritizing archaeological preservation, including the restoration of colonial-era temples in the Colca Valley and the protection of major sites like Machu Picchu. Complementing these state efforts, new literary works have been presented in Juliaca to mark the province's centenary, addressing the city's evolution and remembering victims of significant historical events to ensure the preservation of human stories.
