Cultural heritage initiatives in Algeria and Tunisia
Overview
Algeria and Tunisia have launched various initiatives aimed at preserving and promoting their cultural and artistic heritage.
In Algeria, efforts have focused on cinema and prehistoric preservation. The Ministry of Culture and Arts initiated a program of twelve national film premieres to reconnect the public with Algerian cinema. Additionally, the first International Rock Art Festival opened in Djanet, bringing together experts from twelve countries to discuss the scientific study and conservation of prehistoric rock art in the Tassili N’Ajjer UNESCO World Heritage site.
In Tunisia, cultural activities have centered on intellectual tributes and professional training. Events in Tunis have honored the legacy of thinker and former Minister of Culture Mahmoud Messaâdi, while the Tunisian Federation of Cine-Clubs organized the ‘Assises des Ciné-Clubs’ to address the evolution of film clubs. Furthermore, a new three-year partnership between the Hasdrubal Foundation for Culture and Arts, the National Heritage Institute, and the Higher Institute of Fine Arts of Nabeul has established a ‘school-workshop’ dedicated to training students in art restoration techniques.
