Cybercrime trends in Ghana and Guyana
Overview
Cybersecurity authorities in Ghana and Guyana have reported significant increases in cyber-attack activity and financial losses during 2026.
In Ghana, the Cyber Security Authority (CSA) recorded 4,938 incidents between January and September 2026, with estimated losses exceeding 209 million Ghana cedis. This represents a sharp rise from 2025, when losses were recorded at over 22.5 million Ghana cedis. Dr. Divine Selase Agbeti, Director-General of the CSA, noted that the figures likely underrepresent the true scale of the problem and identified online fraud, cyberbullying, and sextortion as growing threats. To combat these issues, the CSA plans to establish an office in the Volta Region by the end of 2026 to improve law enforcement collaboration.
In Guyana, the police reported approximately 1.1 million cyber-attack attempts and threat events during the first six months of 2026. Martina Johnson, a public relations consultant for the police, stated the country’s expanding economy has made it a “prime target for hackers globally.”
