Diplomatic efforts to resolve the Cyprus dispute have entered a phase of intensified dialogue following a visit by UN Secretary-General António Guterres. European Council President António Costa met with Christodoulides in Nicosia, stating that “a united Europe needs a reunited Cyprus.” Costa suggested the EU could contribute by leveraging relations with Turkey, though he noted the UN must lead the dialogue. Christodoulides argued the EU possesses unique tools to play a “decisive role” and called for a broad conference to restart negotiations. Internal tensions have emerged, including skepticism from critics like retired General Phoivos Klokkaris regarding the transparency of past frameworks. Additionally, protests have been organized against Christodoulides following a meeting with Israeli President Isaac Herzog, with critics arguing that deepening military cooperation with Israel could involve Cyprus in regional geopolitical conflicts and undermine reunification efforts.
