Cyprus economic and maritime sector growth

Overview

Cyprus has experienced significant economic growth driven by various sectors. The government reported a record surplus of €1,589.1 million for the first eight months of the year, representing 4.1% of GDP. This increase was fueled by rising tax and VAT revenues, despite higher state expenditures.

Parallel to these fiscal gains, the maritime sector has seen substantial expansion. President Nikos Christodoulides reported that the Cypriot shipping fleet grew by approximately 27% over the last three years, contributing to a 19% to 20% increase in state revenues related to ship management. To support this growth and enhance maritime oversight, the government plans to establish a Coastline Unit, which is expected to be operational by 2027.

Recent revised national accounts indicate that Cyprus has maintained a position among the two fastest-growing economies in the European Union for three consecutive years. Government spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis stated that the country ranked first in the EU for growth in 2024 and second in both 2023 and 2025. Significant upward revisions were applied to previous estimates: the 2023 growth rate was adjusted to 6% from 3.6%, the 2024 figure rose to 6.6% from 3.9%, and the 2025 estimate was increased to 4.8% from 3.8%.

Fiscal data for 2025 shows a surplus of €1,360.2 million (3.6% of GDP), with total revenues rising 7.7% to €15,895.2 million. Public debt for 2025 stood at 52.3% of GDP. By the second quarter of 2026, Eurostat reported a seasonally adjusted general government surplus of 3.3% of GDP, while gross public debt decreased to 48.5% of GDP.
