Cyprus mountain community and tourism development

Overview

The Cypriot government is implementing strategies to revitalize mountainous regions, specifically the Troodos area, to address demographic and economic challenges.

President Nicos Christodoulides announced a new housing scheme designed for mountainous communities to assist young people and families. This initiative follows previous Cabinet decisions to provide state plots at a 75% discount and aims to double the population of mountainous and Tylliria communities from 32,000 to 64,000 residents over the next decade.

Parallel to housing efforts, the government is promoting mountain and rural tourism to stabilize the sector following a decline caused by a drone strike on the Akrotiri UK base in March 2026. While tourism saw an initial decline, officials report the impact has been less severe than projected. The National Tourism Strategy 2035 seeks to encourage year-round visitation through nature and outdoor activities, supported by infrastructure improvements and new standards for hiking trail management.
