Czech administrative staff reduction efforts
Overview
Efforts to reduce administrative staffing are occurring at both the regional and national levels in the Czech Republic.
In the South Bohemian Region, a multi-year optimization process initiated after the 2020 elections is projected to reduce the regional office workforce by 20 percent by 2027. Governor Martin Kuba stated the reduction fulfills a promise to optimize state spending. The downsizing, which aims for total savings of approximately 200 million CZK, is being managed through technology integration and gradual optimization. Regional office director Lukáš Glaser noted that remaining staff would receive higher salaries and improved benefits.
At the national level, Prime Minister Andrej Babiš proposed a plan to cut state administration and subordinate office jobs by 10 percent by January 1. The proposal, presented by Head of the Government Office Tünde Bartha, faced resistance from several ministers regarding the lack of notice and implementation details. While Finance Minister Alena Schillerová expressed support in principle, other ministers raised concerns about the scope and impact. Consequently, the government suspended deliberations on the resolution.
