Czech authorities crackdown on illegal psychoactive drugs
Overview
Following a localized police investigation in Olomouc where officers seized fifteen 1-kilogram packages and several smaller packages of kratom during a street altercation, Czech authorities launched a broader inter-ministerial crackdown.
The operation, known as KORUND, targeted the illegal sale of kratom, cannabis, and synthetic psychoactive substances across the Czech Republic. Led by the Ministry of the Interior, the operation inspected nearly 1,000 establishments, finding legal violations in 63 percent of them.
Authorities documented approximately 900 illegal acts and seized significant quantities of substances, including 1,300 kg of kratom, 3,000 kg of hashish, 11.7 tons of low-potency cannabis, and 22.6 kg of synthetic cannabinoids. Laboratory testing of over 3,000 samples indicated that 87 percent contained dangerous synthetic psychoactive substances.
In response to the findings, Interior Minister Lubomír Metnar emphasized the necessity of closing legal loopholes to protect the public. Ministries are now developing 16 legislative and 17 organizational measures to reduce the availability of these substances.
