Czech film and television industry developments

Overview

The Czech film landscape is seeing developments in both cinema distribution and television broadcasting. The Tady Vary film project is expanding its network to 77 locations for the 2026/27 season, reporting a 55 percent year-on-year increase in pre-sales. The project’s upcoming program aims to balance international auteur films with audience-friendly titles.

Simultaneously, a new television channel named České kino is scheduled to launch via Magenta TV on September 28, 2026. The channel will focus exclusively on Czech content, featuring nostalgic Czechoslovak series, fairy tales, and recent domestic comedies.

This launch coincides with the celebration of Czech Statehood Day on September 28, a public holiday honoring the legacy of Saint Wenceslaus. During the celebrations, thousands gathered in Stará Boleslav for a national pilgrimage and mass led by Prague Archbishop Stanislav Přibyl, who called for social reconciliation and warned against allowing disagreement to turn into hatred.

At the Vítkov National Monument, President Petr Pavel, Defense Minister Jaromír Zůna, and Chief of the General Staff Miroslav Hlaváč attended the opening of a new permanent exhibition titled ‘Symbols of Statehood.’ President Pavel noted that state symbols serve as a vital reminder of home and responsibility for soldiers serving abroad. Other regional festivities included folklore festivals in Český Krumlov. Due to the public holiday, large retail stores remain closed, with exceptions for pharmacies, gas stations, and small shops at transport hubs.
