Czech healthcare structural and administrative reforms

The Czech healthcare landscape is undergoing structural changes focused on specialized care and administrative modernization. Initially, the General Health Insurance Company (VZP) announced plans to introduce in-house cardiology care coordinators to manage cardiovascular care and pilot remote telemonitoring projects. This initiative leverages digitalized administrative processes to free up staff capacity.

Following these developments, the Czech Ministry of Health announced a plan to centralize complex surgical procedures, specifically oncological operations, into specialized centers to improve survival rates. This rollout begins in September with liver, pancreas, and esophageal tumor surgeries, with further phases planned through 2030. While the Ministry aims to strengthen medical transport to assist patients, regional hospital directors have expressed concerns that losing these procedures may impact the ability to attract young doctors and reduce accessibility for elderly or less mobile populations.

Additionally, VZP has raised concerns regarding the potential expansion of vaccination services to pharmacists, noting that such a move requires a unified, real-time data architecture to prevent administrative errors and ensure patient safety.
