Czech Railways CEO security clearance controversy

Michal Krapinec, CEO of Czech Railways (České dráhy), voluntarily resigned from his ‘Confidential’ level security clearance following an investigation by the National Security Authority into potential information leaks. Krapinec stated that the requirements for maintaining the clearance, including documenting personal finances and private relationships, were “overly burdensome” for his professional and family life. Although the law does not mandate this specific clearance level for his role, Czech Transport Minister Ivan Bednárik noted that holding such a clearance was a condition of his selection as CEO in 2022.

The situation has led to political scrutiny and a scheduled meeting of the České dráhy supervisory board to address Krapinec’s status. While the company maintains that the loss of clearance does not impede his ability to perform his duties, political figures have criticized his leadership. The supervisory board meeting, which was moved forward from its original mid-September date, is being viewed as a potential turning point for Krapinec’s tenure.
