Czech-Slovak diplomatic relations and monument unveiling
Overview
Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš and Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico met in Prague to unveil ‘Medzi nami’ (Between Us), a bronze and granite monument created by sculptor Vladimír Durbák. Located in the gardens of the Strakova Academy, the artwork depicts the maps of both nations joined by shaking hands to symbolize mutual dialogue, assistance, and shared history.
The ceremony, held to commemorate the 108th anniversary of the founding of Czechoslovakia, aimed to highlight deep historical, cultural, and economic ties. Leaders emphasized the importance of peaceful cooperation regarding global security and energy challenges.
The event was marked by protests from demonstrators outside the government headquarters. Protesters expressed opposition to Prime Minister Fico’s political stance on Russia and the conflict in Ukraine through the use of whistles, engine noise, and the playing of the Russian national anthem, while others displayed Ukrainian flags.
