Following a documentary titled ‘De lovløse kolonihaver’ which exposed widespread rule violations in Danish allotment gardens, authorities have begun enforcing stricter regulations regarding house sizes and residency status. The documentary highlighted residents building structures exceeding size limits and living in gardens year-round to avoid property taxes.

In Vejle, the municipality has threatened to demolish approximately 80 houses and is utilizing mandates, fines, and police involvement to address non-compliance. In response to local plans limiting main houses to 50 square meters and annexes to 30 square meters, some residents have taken radical measures, such as physically cutting their houses in half to separate legal dwellings from annexes. While roughly 100 residents have sued the municipality to challenge the validity of these plans, others are attempting to legalize their properties through dialogue or by selling and removing their structures.
