Danish tax debt collection challenges
Overview
The Danish Debt Agency (Gældsstyrelsen) is struggling with a rise in citizens moving abroad while owing money to the state. The number of such debtors increased from 120,000 in 2016 to approximately 200,000 by the end of 2025, with total debt reaching 20.1 billion DKK, including 5.9 billion DKK in unpaid interest.
Collection efforts are hindered by a lack of contact information for 78,000 individuals. Common locations for these debtors include Poland, Romania, Sweden, Lithuania, and Germany. Consequently, the National Audit Office (Rigsrevisionen) has initiated an investigation into the agency’s effectiveness, with findings expected in early 2027.
Additionally, various organizations are urging the government to evaluate how legislation affects Danes living abroad, noting that current social assistance rules and digital ID systems often fail to account for the specific circumstances of those residing outside the country.
