Danube river maritime security operation

Overview

Between October 12 and 16, 2026, a joint security operation involving police from Slovakia, Germany, Austria, and Hungary was conducted on the Danube. Despite low water levels and suspended navigation, authorities performed inspections in Bratislava, including daytime and nighttime patrols.

The operation targeted five large passenger vessels and one floating facility. Inspections uncovered safety violations regarding crew and passenger protection, as well as serious environmental violations related to wastewater management. One captain was fined for operating a vessel without a required Danube navigation permit.

Funded by the European Union, the mission aimed to improve international cooperation in detecting illegal transport, irregular migration, labor law violations, and environmental risks. Participating agencies included the Slovak Financial Administration, the Transport Authority, the Environmental Inspection, the Labor Inspectorate, and the European Labour Authority.
