Death and memorial of trotter Varenne

Overview

The legendary trotting horse Varenne, nicknamed ‘Il Capitano’, died at the age of 31 due to a sudden heart attack at the LJ breeding farm in Eboli, Italy. Varenne was widely considered the greatest trotter in history, having won 62 of 73 races and earning over 6 million euros during a career that included two Grand Slams and a Breeders Crown Trot victory in the United States.

Following his death, plans were initiated to honor the horse with a mausoleum at the Eboli farm. While the heirs of owner Enzo Giordano initially requested a sanitary derogation from local health authorities to allow for burial, Varenne has since been cremated, and his ashes have been delivered to the farm. Dario De Angelis, owner of the LJ farm, expressed gratitude to the Giordano family for respecting Enzo’s desire to keep the horse at the estate, noting that Varenne loved the farm and the dedication of the staff.

The proposed memorial project continues to include a public space for enthusiasts and the creation of a statue or sculpture by professional artists. The farm intends to collaborate with sculptors and artists to create a memorial space that commemorates the horse’s historic career and status in the Hall of Fame.

Further details regarding his unprecedented career highlight that Varenne was the only horse in global racing history to be named ‘Horse of the Year’ in three different countries: Italy, France, and the United States. After retiring from competition, he became a successful stallion, producing over 2,000 offspring, including several Italian Derby winners.
