Overview

Greek singer Dimitris Kokotas passed away on Tuesday, August 25, at Georgios Gennimatas Hospital at the age of 57. His death followed a prolonged health battle lasting nearly two and a half years after he suffered a myocardial infarction and cardiac arrest during a television rehearsal for the show ‘J2US’ in March 2024. During this period, he had remained in a coma.

Kokotas, the son of renowned singer Stamatis Kokotas, was a successful recording artist in the 1990s, earning gold and platinum albums through a musical partnership with composer Phoebus. Beyond his musical career, he served as a municipal councillor for Agia Varvara after being elected in 2023. In recognition of his service, the Municipality of Agia Varvara announced it would cover his funeral expenses, fly its flag at half-mast, and establish both an events hall and a conservatory scholarship in his honor.

Colleagues and friends have offered tributes to the singer. Composer Phoebus described him as a ‘great singer,’ a ‘true friend,’ and a ‘person of exceptional virtue’ who had marked his life in a special way.

Kokotas is survived by his wife, Katerina Petrakis, and their daughter, Riana. His funeral service was held on Friday, August 28, at the Holy Church of Panagia Eleousa in Agia Varvara, followed by burial at the Third Cemetery of Athens. The service was attended by numerous figures from the Greek music and entertainment industry, including Grigoris Bithikotsis and Stelios Dionysiou. During the eulogy, Petrakis expressed her gratitude for their life together and the child they shared, describing him as ‘half of my life.’
