Greek singer Giorgos Mazonakis died at age 54 following a cardiac arrest on September 9, 2026, after visiting a private clinic in the Kolonaki district of Athens for a scheduled plasmaferesis procedure. Although he was transported to Elpis Hospital via ambulance at 16:45, he was pronounced dead at 17:40 following unsuccessful resuscitation efforts. Athens Police arrested two doctors, Ilias Theodoropoulos and Ioanna Gaka, on charges of fatal exposure. While the doctors claimed the singer arrived around 16:00, security footage showed him entering at approximately 13:00. Investigations revealed the clinic was only licensed as a pathological office and was not authorized to perform plasmaferesis. A three-member committee from the Medical Association of Athens (ISA) discovered two undeclared plasmaferesis machines during an inspection, noting that previous unannounced inspections in 2024 and 2025 had failed to detect them. Medical responders from EKAB reported Mazonakis was already in cardiac arrest upon their arrival and noted a non-functional defibrillator at the scene. Allegations suggest the doctors may have used artificial intelligence to search for revival methods after he lost consciousness, and a 56-year-old doctor is under scrutiny for allegedly attempting to delete a photo of the singer taken during treatment. Digital forensics have since been utilized to investigate these claims. The Greek Hematology Society has raised concerns regarding unregulated alternative treatments, noting that stem cell use in such clinics is often unproven and potentially dangerous. The family, represented by Charalambos Lykoudis, is seeking to upgrade charges to manslaughter with potential intent. The doctors have been granted until Monday, September 14, to prepare their defense. Beyond the criminal and disciplinary proceedings, the Independent Authority for Public Revenue (AADE) has launched a tax audit of the clinic, examining bank accounts and hard drives for financial irregularities.
