Death investigation of singer Giorgos Mazonakis
Overview
Greek singer Giorgos Mazonakis died at age 54 following a cardiac arrest on September 9, 2026, after visiting a private clinic in the Kolonaki district of Athens for a scheduled plasmaferesis procedure. Although he was transported to Elpis Hospital via ambulance at 16:45, he was pronounced dead at 17:40 following unsuccessful resuscitation efforts.
Athens Police arrested two doctors, Ilias Theodoropoulos and Ioanna Gaka, on charges of fatal exposure after discovering discrepancies between their testimonies and security footage. While the doctors claimed the singer arrived around 16:00, footage showed him entering the clinic at approximately 13:30. Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis noted the clinic was only licensed as a pathological office and was not authorized to perform plasmaferesis. The Medical Association of Athens subsequently launched an inspection of the facility, where two plasmaferesis machines were discovered.
Following a forensic autopsy, the family of Mazonakis is seeking to upgrade criminal charges to homicide with potential intent. Their legal representative, Charalambos Lykoudis, stated that the autopsy confirmed the singer had no pre-existing heart disease, supporting claims that the death resulted from medical malpractice. Forensic pathologist Dimitris Galenteris noted that because no acute pathology was found, the cardiac arrest might have been reversible if proper CPR and defibrillation had been applied immediately.
The two doctors have been granted until Monday, September 14, to prepare their defense before the investigating magistrate. The legal distinction between the current charge of fatal exposure and the family’s requested charge of manslaughter with potential intent hinges on whether the defendants acted with awareness of the serious risk of a fatal outcome. The official cause of death remains ‘undetermined’ as investigators await toxicological and histological examination results.
