Death of American security official in Haiti

Overview

Michael Gallagher, a 63-year-old American security chief for the tobacco company Comme Il Faut S.A., was found dead in his office in Tabarre, Haiti, on August 19, 2026.

Initial reports indicated that Gallagher’s death may have resulted from a knife attack. Following the discovery, the Direction centrale de la police judiciaire (DCPJ) detained between 11 and 12 security agents from the company for questioning.

The U.S. Department of State confirmed the death of the American citizen and stated that the U.S. Embassy in Haiti is coordinating with local authorities to provide consular assistance. Gallagher had worked for the company for approximately 14 years in an area frequently affected by clashes between armed groups.
