Finlay Tarling, a 19-year-old British cyclist for the NSN Development Team, died following a head-on collision with a light goods vehicle during the eighth stage of the Volta a Portugal. The accident occurred on the route between Melgaço and Fafe, near Ponte de Lima, as Tarling was riding behind the main peloton on a descent.

Investigations by the Guarda Nacional Republicana (GNR) revealed that the driver entered the race course via a secondary access road. According to Lieutenant Colonel Carlos Canatario of the GNR, the driver had stopped to wait for the peloton but proceeded after bystanders suggested the race had already passed, despite existing signage. The driver was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

In response to the tragedy, race organizers neutralized the stage and canceled the scheduled podium ceremony. The NSN Development Team withdrew from the remainder of the competition but announced intentions to participate in upcoming races in the Czech Republic and Norway to honor Tarling’s memory.

The incident has sparked intense debate regarding safety protocols. The Cyclistes Professionnels Associés (CPA) expressed fury over the event, and former professionals have criticized the race’s security measures as inadequate. Consequently, the Portuguese Cycling Federation (FPC) announced plans to propose new penalties within the national Highway Code for motorists who disobey authorities during public sporting events.
