Death of former Japanese Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda

Overview

Former Japanese Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda has died at the age of 90 due to heart failure. He served as Japan’s 91st Prime Minister from September 2007 to September 2008, succeeding Shinzo Abe. Fukuda was noted for his diplomatic efforts, particularly in improving relations with China and strengthening ties with other Asian nations.

During his political career, Fukuda also served as Chief Cabinet Secretary under the administrations of Mori Yoshiro and Koizumi Junichiro. He was often viewed as a stabilizing force in Japanese politics, particularly while navigating a period of divided parliament.

Following his death, Vietnam expressed deep condolences. Deputy Prime Minister Le Tien Chau visited the Japanese Embassy in Hanoi to pay respects, describing Fukuda as a “great friend to the Vietnamese people.” Officials noted his role in deepening bilateral relations, specifically citing his 2007 hosting of President Nguyen Minh Triet, which helped establish the foundation for the current comprehensive strategic partnership between Vietnam and Japan.
