Sandro Mazzola, a legendary figure for Inter Milan and the Italian national team, has died at the age of 83. During his 17-season career with Inter Milan, Mazzola was a central pillar of the ‘Grande Inter’ era under manager Helenio Herrera, winning four Serie A titles, two European Cups, and two Intercontinental Cups. Known by the his nickname ‘Baffo’, he was celebrated for his loyalty to the club, where he made hundreds of appearances and scored over 100 goals. His individual accolades include being the Serie A top scorer in 1965 and finishing second in the 1971 Ballon d'Or voting. On the international stage, Mazzola earned 70 caps for Italy, winning the 1968 European Championship and playing a key role in the 1970 World Cup final. His legacy is also defined by his personal history as the son of Valentino Mazzola, the captain of the Grande Torino side that perished in the 1949 Superga air disaster. Following his death, tributes were offered by football figures such as Massimiliano Allegri and Fabio Capello, as well as Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who called him a “great champion” who left an indelible mark on the nation. Hundreds of fans, former players, and football executives gathered at the Basilica of Sant’Ambrogio in Milan to attend his funeral. The ceremony included attendees such as Inter Milan President Giuseppe Marotta Marotta, who emphasized the importance of preserving Mazzola’s legacy and values, as well as representatives from rival clubs Milan and Juventus, alongside and the FIGC. Other notable attendees included Milan President Paolo Scaroni and former teammates Giuseppe Bergomi, Aristide Guarneri, and Ivan Ramiro Cordoba. Cordoba, and Esteban Cambiasso. Both the city of Milan and the municipality of Vedano al Lambro declared periods of mourning to honor his legacy.
