Death of Italian wine leader Vittorio Frescobaldi

Marchese Vittorio Frescobaldi, a prominent leader in the Italian wine industry and a member of the 31st generation of his historic Florentine dynasty, has died in Florence at the age of 97.

Frescobaldi is credited with modernizing his family’s agricultural structures and transforming Italian wine from a local product into an international symbol of excellence. Alongside his brothers, Ferdinando and Leonardo, he expanded the family business through the valorization of Tuscan territories and the acquisition of significant estates such as Pomino, Nipozzano, and Castiglioni. His leadership included notable international ventures, such as a 1995 partnership with American winemaker Robert Mondavi.

Following his death, tributes were offered by Italian institutional figures, including the Minister of Agriculture and the President of the Tuscany Region. Industry leaders, such as Giovanni Busi, president of the Chianti Wine Consortium, gathered at a wake held at the convent of Santo Spirito in Florence to pay their respects to a figure described as a “reference point for the sector.”
