Death of Japanese comedian Great Gidayu

Overview

Japanese comedian and musician Great Gidayu, born Masayuki Suzuki, passed away on September 7, 2026, at the age of 67. He was a member of the “Takeshi Gundan” comedy group led by Beat Takeshi.

Gidayu was found collapsed on the stairs of his apartment building in Nakano, Tokyo. While he was transported to a hospital, he was later confirmed dead. Although the official cause of death remains under police investigation, his talent agency, TAP, noted he had been managing long-term health issues including diabetes and kidney failure requiring dialysis. He had also recently undergone surgery for a myocardial infarction.

Colleagues and associates remembered him as a kind and sincere individual with a multi-talented career spanning variety shows, films, and music. In previous interviews, Gidayu had expressed regret regarding his health management in his younger years.
