Death of Mexican tourist at Machu Picchu
Overview
On September 25, 2026, a 66-year-old Mexican tourist, Álvaro Sánchez Pérez, died at the Machu Picchu archaeological site in the Cusco region of Peru. The incident occurred around 09:25 local time while the visitor was taking photographs on a platform in the upper sector of the ‘andenes’ area on Route 2.
Park personnel and guards activated emergency protocols, providing immediate assistance and notifying medical staff at the citadel entrance clinic and the Peruvian National Police. Following a medical evaluation, it was confirmed that the visitor showed no signs of life.
The case has been referred to the Peruvian Public Ministry for legal proceedings and forensic evaluations. While the exact cause of the collapse has not been officially detailed, authorities noted that the site’s altitude of 2,400 meters can cause altitude sickness, or ‘soroche,’ which may lead to complications for those with respiratory or cardiac conditions.
