Death of NFL legend Mike Ditka

Overview

NFL Hall of Fame player and coach Mike Ditka has died at the age of 86. Known as ‘Iron Mike’, he was a transformative figure at the tight end position and led the Chicago Bears to their only Super Bowl championship in 1985. Ditka’s career was marked by significant achievements; he earned five Pro Bowl selections as a player for the Chicago Bears, Philadelphia Eagles, and Dallas Cowboys. He is also one of only two individuals to win a Super Bowl as a player, an assistant coach, and a head coach. Beyond football, he was a businessman who owned the Ditka’s restaurant chain and served as an emeritus board member for the Gridiron Greats Assistance Fund.

Following his passing on October 9, 2026, from natural causes, his family described him as the ‘heart of our family.’ The Chicago Bears have held several tributes to honor his legacy. During a Week 5 matchup at Lambeau Field, the Bears wore No. 89 helmet decals while the Packers held a moment of silence. To mark what would have been his 87th birthday, the team wore special No. 89 patches during a game against the Atlanta Falcons.

In the Bears’ first home game since his death, held at Soldier Field against the New England Patriots, the organization held a formal tribute. The team distributed fake mustaches to fans and provided headbands styled after Ditka’s signature sweater vests to the first 10,000 attendees. The tribute also included a moment of silence and a graphic of a football with his No. 89 stenciled on the sideline.
