Death of Palestinian officer Fathi Khazem

Overview

Fathi Khazem, a retired colonel in the Palestinian National Security Forces known as ‘Abu Raad’, was killed by Israeli special forces during a raid on his home in Jenin, West Bank. Local reports state that forces prevented an ambulance from reaching the scene, causing Khazem to bleed to death, while Israeli Channel 12 reported the death followed an ‘alleged attempted stabbing’. Khazem had previously been a wanted individual by Israel and was a local symbol of resistance following the deaths of his two sons in 2022.

Following his death, Khazem’s son, Hammam Khazem, criticized the Palestinian Authority for allegedly abandoning his father. The family claims that while the Authority had previously provided support, such as a rental home and vehicle, these were withdrawn, leaving Khazem in substandard housing in Jenin. The family disputes official accounts of his passing, asserting he was the victim of a ‘premeditated and planned’ targeting by Israeli forces and was killed ‘in cold blood’.
