Death sentences issued by Tehran Revolutionary Courts

Overview

Tehran Revolutionary Courts have issued death sentences against individuals facing various security-related charges.

Barzoo Rezaei, arrested in connection with nationwide protests in December 2025, was sentenced to death by the 23rd Branch of the Tehran Revolutionary Court for ‘moharebeh’ (enmity against God). Human rights organizations have questioned the fairness of the trial, alleging Rezaei was denied the right to legal counsel during interrogation.

Varesheh Moradi, a Kurdish political prisoner, received a second death sentence from Branch 15 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court. She is charged with ‘membership in an armed rebel group’ (baghi). Defense lawyers argue the court issued this sentence without the additional investigations previously ordered by the Supreme Court and claim the court merely changed the legal label of the charge to maintain the penalty. Moradi’s defense maintains her activities were related to fighting ISIS in northern Syria rather than operations against the Iranian government.
