Deceptive e-commerce practices in Germany

Reports indicate a rise in fraudulent e-commerce activities targeting German consumers through deceptive online storefronts.

In July 2026, the Chemnitz-based fashion label GERMENS issued a warning regarding a fraudulent website using the domain germins.de. The site closely mimics the official brand by reproducing its logo, product images, descriptions, and the name of CEO René König, differing only by a single letter in the brand name. The company confirmed it has no relationship with the site and advised customers against submitting personal or payment information.

Following this, the German Retail Association (HDE) issued a broader warning concerning an increasing number of online shops originating from China that masquerade as German businesses. These retailers often utilize German names and .de domains to mislead shoppers. According to HDE deputy CEO Stephan Tromp, these businesses frequently sell inferior goods and rely on high return shipping costs to China to make consumer withdrawals economically unfeasible. The HDE advises consumers to verify legal notices, registered headquarters, and return addresses before making purchases.
