Defacement of Rabindranath Tagore murals in Bangladesh

Overview

A series of incidents involving the defacement of murals depicting Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore has been reported in Bangladesh.

In Dhaka, police detained four individuals, including ANM Ayas of the Rashtra Sanglap Forum, following the defacement of a portrait in the Segunbagicha area. The mural, part of a public beautification project, was smeared with black ink. Authorities filed charges including criminal conspiracy and spreading enmity between groups, noting the incident occurred shortly before the Sharadiya Durga Puja festival.

Subsequently, a similar act occurred at the Khulna Railway Station, where a mural of Tagore was also defaced with black ink. While other portraits of historical figures remained untouched, the targeting of Tagore led local officials and activists to express outrage. Some activists suggested the vandalism might be the work of an organized group, citing similarities to the previous incident in Dhaka.
