As of late September, officials noted that only about 0.7% of those issued notices—approximately 23,000 people—have successfully cleared their hearings.

The process has faced legal scrutiny. The Supreme Court of India expressed concern regarding the issuance of notices, observing that they appeared to be sent ‘almost mechanically’ without sufficient clarification of the underlying criteria for ‘logical discrepancies.’ The Commission maintains that the SIR is a standard procedure and that receiving a notice does not equate to permanent removal. Affected voters must present documentation to resolve discrepancies by October 29, with the final electoral roll scheduled for publication on November 4, 2026.
