Delhi High Court limits teacher election duties

In late July 2026 the Delhi High Court scheduled a hearing on a public‑interest litigation seeking to stop the large‑scale deployment of government school teachers for Booth Level Officer and Special Intensive Revision tasks during the electoral roll revision. The petition argued that assigning more than 10 % of a school’s teachers to election work disrupted classroom teaching and violated constitutional rights and the Right to Education Act.

A week later the Court issued an order directing the Election Commission of India to ensure that the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls does not impose an "unbearable" burden on teachers. The bench stressed that while the Commission may involve teachers under Article 324, the Right to Education Act permits non‑educational work only for census, disaster relief and election duties, and warned that excessive duties could cause undue stress, especially for female teachers with family responsibilities.
