Delhi protests and transit disruptions

Overview

Protests organized by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) and various opposition and student groups in Delhi led to significant urban disruptions. In response to marches and demonstrations regarding alleged irregularities in the Election Commission’s functioning, authorities implemented traffic diversions at approximately 30 major locations across New Delhi and Central Delhi.

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) also imposed entry and exit restrictions at several stations, including Rajiv Chowk and Mandi House, to maintain law and order. Following these actions, the DMRC filed an unconditional apology with the Supreme Court. The corporation clarified that while restrictions were applied to 45 stations—approximately 15 percent of the network—the majority of the system remained operational. The DMRC noted that passenger numbers dropped to 32 lakh on the day of the protests, compared to a typical Saturday average of 58 lakh.
