Delhi student housing infrastructure development
Overview
Following a fatal accident at a paying guest accommodation in Satya Niketan that resulted in seven deaths, the Delhi Government announced plans to develop hostel facilities for 10,000 students to provide safe and affordable housing.
In response to ongoing accommodation shortages and the previous tragedy, the University of Delhi is considering a large-scale Rs 8,000-crore proposal for hostel construction and redevelopment. The plan aims to accommodate over 30,000 students through new facilities at the Dhaka Complex, Najafgarh, and Surajmal Vihar campuses, as well as the reconstruction of existing North Campus structures. Proposed developments include high-rise hostels at the Dhaka Complex and dedicated accommodations for working women.
