In July 2026 the Democratic National Committee disclosed that it had pledged its Washington, D.C., headquarters as collateral for a $15 million line of credit, the largest off‑year loan the party has taken in recent cycles. The loan was secured despite the party’s failure to list the collateral in its Federal Election Commission filings, prompting concerns about the DNC’s cash‑flow pressures.

The financial strain was highlighted by a February 2025 email fraud scheme in which a message impersonating newly appointed chair Ken Martin led a staffer to transfer roughly $28,800 to scammers. The DNC reported the loss promptly, alerted its bank and the FEC, and has recovered about $7,000 of the stolen funds. At the time of the incident the committee held about $16.3 million in cash against $18.5 million in debt, while the Republican National Committee reported a cash surplus of $128.5 million. The episode underscores ongoing challenges to the DNC’s campaign‑finance security and overall fiscal health.
