Democratic Republic of the Congo political detention
Overview
In late October 2026, opposition leaders in the Democratic Republic of the Congo faced interference while attempting to travel to Rome for a Coalition Article 64 meeting. At N’djili International Airport, migration services confiscated the passports of Martin Fayulu and Jean-Baptiste Kasekwa, though they eventually recovered their documents.
Prince Epenge, president of ADD Congo and spokesperson for the LAMUKA coalition, was detained during the incident. He was reportedly taken to the National Cyber Defense Council for questioning. Prosecutors have accused Epenge of spreading false information concerning the death of activist Manassé Lomboto, who died during a march in September.
The LAMUKA coalition has characterized the detention as an abduction and demanded Epenge’s unconditional release. Political opponent Martin Fayulu has condemned the move, warning against a “two-speed justice” system. Additionally, Human Rights Watch reported rising tensions in Kinshasa, noting geolocated footage of alleged attacks on opposition headquarters, including ADD-Congo, by members of the Force du Progrès.
