Democratic socialist movement in US politics

Darializa Avila Chevalier, a 32-year-old democratic socialist and community organizer, has emerged as a key figure in a progressive movement within the Democratic Party. Following a primary victory over the chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus in June, Chevalier has been preparing for the midterm elections as a candidate for New York’s 13th Congressional District.

Her platform emphasizes the abolition of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), support for Palestinians, and the empowerment of working people through co-governance. In her campaign, Chevalier has advocated for identity-specific frameworks, stating her intention to “build black socialism within the caucuses of DSA.” She describes her approach as focusing on “racial justice as economic justice” through both “black socialism” and “Latino socialism.”

If Democrats regain control of the House of Representatives in November, Chevalier and a cohort of other democratic socialist nominees could potentially exert significant influence over progressive priorities and the speakership, particularly if the Democratic majority remains narrow.
