Dengue fever outbreaks continue across South and Southeast Asia. In Sri Lanka, the National Dengue Control Unit recorded 88,088 confirmed cases and 63 deaths, while Singapore reported over 1,700 cumulative cases. Malaysia saw cases surge to 58,079 by mid-August, a 56.2 percent increase over the previous year, resulting in 55 deaths. In Bangladesh, the epidemic has escalated rapidly, with 42,590 hospitalizations and 117 deaths recorded. A record-breaking 1,558 hospitalizations occurred in a single 24-hour period, the highest daily tally of the year. This surge is placing immense pressure on a healthcare system also managing a measles epidemic that has claimed nearly 1,000 children's lives. Professor Kabirul Bashar of Jahangirnagar University warned that the epidemic may not have peaked, suggesting hospitalizations could exceed 30,000 this month if trends continue through October. Localized crises have emerged in Bangladesh, such as in the Pirojpur district of the Barishal division, where 1,965 patients have been admitted this year. This has led to acute shortages of hospital beds, forcing some patients to be treated on floors. In India, West Bengal infections have exceeded 4,500 for the year, with more than 500 new infections reported in the last seven days. Murshidabad remains the most severely affected district with 870 total cases, followed by Kolkata with 402. In response, West Bengal Municipal Affairs and Urban Development Minister Agnimitra Paul stated the government is focused on eradication and transparency, emphasizing that authorities have been directed to report all cases accurately following blood tests rather than suppressing numbers. This follows a September 2 standard operating procedure involving door-to-door monitoring and immediate testing.
