Dental preventative care gaps in Germany

Recent data and reports in Germany have highlighted significant gaps in dental preventative care across different demographic groups.

In Baden-Württemberg, analysis of 2024 billing data from Barmer health insurance indicates low utilization of dental prophylaxis among care recipients. Only about 30 percent of inpatient care recipients and 2.4 percent of outpatient care recipients received these services. Winfried Plötze, a regional manager for Barmer, noted that visiting a dentist is often difficult for those in inpatient care and pointed out that only half of the 2,059 inpatient facilities in the region have established cooperation agreements with dentists.

Simultaneously, reports regarding pediatric dental health show similar challenges in preventative care uptake. In Lübeck, data from AOK Nordwest showed that only 60.3 percent of insured children and adolescents aged six to 17 utilized free dental check-ups. While educational initiatives, such as a dental health event in Langelsheim involving approximately 200 children, aim to teach proper hygiene, officials like Reinhard Wunsch emphasized that there remains “significant room for improvement” in dental prevention to avoid future cavities and jaw misalignments.
