Detention of activists in Vietnam
Overview
Australian-Vietnamese activist Tran Hiep and Norwegian-Vietnamese activist Nguyen Duc Thuan disappeared in Cambodia on September 18 while traveling to meet with dissidents. The pro-democracy group Viet Tan alleged the men were abducted in Cambodia and forcibly taken into Vietnam, characterizing the subsequent Vietnamese charges as fabricated.
Vietnamese authorities detained the men on terrorism and document forgery charges, asserting they had illegally entered Vietnam from the Cambodian border. Following the disappearance, it was confirmed that Hiep is being held at the B34 Detention Centre of the Ministry of Public Security in Ho Chi Minh City.
While consular correspondence indicated Hiep is in good health and being detained according to local regulations, his family expressed concern regarding his safety and his inability to meet with Australian consular officials. The Australian government has stated it is providing consular assistance.
