Argentine footballer Matías Pourrain was detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) at the Fort Lauderdale airport while traveling to Los Angeles for a sporting event. While earlier reports initially linked him to Lyon FC, he has since been identified as a 34-year-old semi-professional player for Miami United. Following his arrest on August 6, Pourrain was transferred from Florida to the Rio Grande Detention Center in Laredo, Texas. This transfer, conducted without prior notice, resulted in the cancellation of a scheduled bail hearing in Florida. His attorney, Regina de Moraes, stated the move would delay his potential release by several weeks. Pourrain has since provided harrowing details regarding his treatment while in custody, ~~alleging~~ describing his 22-day immigration detention as “torture” and “pure terror.” He reported being handcuffed at both his hands and ankles and transported in an unmarked van. His defense continues to argue that his detention stems from a “gray area of immigration law” regarding incomplete paperwork during his permanent residency process. He remains in ICE custody pending removal proceedings.
