The humanitarian emergency in Gaza continues to worsen. A UN health assessment in July 2026 recorded more than 9,000 cholera cases, a surge of acute-respiratory and skin infections, and roughly 9,300 suspected chickenpox cases. Overcrowded displacement tents, a collapsed sewage system, and severe shortages of medicine and clean water have made isolating the sick impossible, threatening a full health-system collapse. The detention of Palestinian health workers has intensified the crisis. Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, former director of Kamal Adwan Hospital, has been held without charge since his arrest on 27 December 2024. By late July 2026, the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention concluded that his continued detention violates international law and demanded his immediate release. Reports from the Prisoners' Media Office and legal representatives indicate Dr. Abu Safiya has suffered life-threatening injuries, including multiple rib fractures, eye and head injuries, and chest trauma.
